The EDA PLAY application helps children with visual impairment train vision and children with fine motor skill disorders train fine motor skills. The app is designed so to stimulate the child to watch the action on the tablet display in an interactive way and to complete the tasks. The visual and audio treatment of the application supports eye-hand coordination.

Vision training

The app enables setting of visual processing of tasks on 4 levels: on the first level, you will always find full shapes of pictures, with no details. The second level brings full shapes with several details. The third one contains pictures with emphasis on several details, often in two or more colours. And on the fourth level, the pictures are only visible as outlines.

Fine motor skills

The app enables to select from 4 task levels. The first level features tasks which only require tapping of any point on the display. The second task level trains the eye-hand coordination. The third level trains the basic shapes and hand movement in elementary directions. The fourth level features the most challenging tasks, which also exercise irregular shapes, completion or connecting shapes based on similarities.

Audio guide

Upon viewing every task, we hear a spoken word (child’s voice) which explains the brief in an understandable way.

Languages: The app is available in Czech and English.

The task categories can be set, depending on the vision skills and fine motor skills level of the child. Some tasks train not only the motion coordination but also the child’s colour orientation. The EDA PLAY app is developed in cooperation specialists in the field of visual impairment and caring for children with special needs.

Don't want to play the tasks as the app offers them and want to skip straight to new tasks?

Tasks in the game are ordered from the easiest to the most complex. In the EDA PLAY app, you can jump to the task of your choice, you don't have to follow the order that the game automatically offers. If you want to focus only on touch tasks, you can turn off the automatic tasks. You have installed the EDA PLAY app. Start the task in it. On the game screen, press and hold the circle icon in the upper left corner for a few seconds. You will be taken to the Task overview where you can select the task of your choice.

The EDA PLAY app includes the Simulator of visual disorders. How to access the Simulator: You have the EDA PLAY app installed. Start the app and play any task. On the game screen, hold the doll symbol in the bottom right corner for a few seconds. In the Main Menu, select the INFO button, then simply click on Simulator of visual disorders.

The EDA PLAY app contains the Skills section which records the work of the child with the application. Thus, the parents and therapists can monitor the development of the child’s skills over time.

"...For students working in visual and task levels 1-3, consider using three dimensional objects to pair with images on the iPad screen: This will make the experience multi-dimensional for the child with visual impairments. The child would actually be able to put his or her hands on a toy tractor, pig, or train. The teacher or parent could use this learning opportunity as a way to illustrate how a train rolls, how many legs a pig has, or what the beak of a rooster feels like. Additionally, for the child with motor impairments in an assistive mobility device such as a wheelchair, the teacher or parent could illustrate with the toy tractor or train how it rolls like the child's mobility device and then moves their child at the same time to increase the child's understanding of words like "roll" and "wheel."

"...One of the easier games (Task Level set to G1) shows a large blue horseshoe on a plain black background. A child's voice asks you to touch the horseshoe to hear a horse neigh. All you have to do is touch the screen to get the reward of the horse neigh and praise. Simple right?
But you can change the way the game looks by choosing different Visual Levels. The image below on the left is set to Visual Level V1 and the image on the right is set to V4. See the difference? So if you want to keep the play simple but work on your child's visual discrimination, you may choose the higher setting for the visual level. ..."
